Six States Get An Extra Day to File Their Taxes in 2007-Is Yours One of Them?

We all know that the day to file your personal income taxes is April 15, right? Yea.

Well, except if April 15 falls on a weekend or legal holiday, then its April 16. Ok, yea.

But what if Sunday is April 15, and Monday is a state (not Federal) holiday? Then what?

The IRS said, in Notice 2006-103, that six states and Washington D.C, get to file their 2006 personal income tax returns on April 17, 2007, since Monday, April 16 is Patriot’s Day, a state holiday. Those states are:

  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Vermont
  • District of Columbia

This applies to federal individual income tax returns, both paper returns and those filed electronically. It also applies to form 4868 (six month extension request), balance due payments for 2006, estimated tax payments for individuals for Jan.-Mar. 2007, and claims for individual tax refunds for tax year 2003.
Everybody else in the country: you’re stuck with the Monday, April 16 deadline.
